The practice was founded by Dr. Samuel Bailey at 64 Carlton Road in 1874. He was the son of Samuel Bailey, a chemist who practiced at 11 Carlton Road. Samuel died in 1881 and the practice was taken over by Dr. William Thompson, who married Samuel Bailey’s widow.
In 1907 the practice was moved to their family home at 70 Carlton Road. In 1919 William Thompson was joined by his step-son, Dr. Walter Bailey-Thompson and they worked together until William’s retirement in 1938. Walter was joined by his daughter Dr. Joyce Bailey-Thompson in 1941 and she and her husband Dr. John “Sean” Dillon worked there together from 1942.
In 1950 Dr. Leslie Watkinson joined the practice and worked there until 1982, when Dr. Naresh Sood joined. Dr. Joyce retired in 1983 and Dr. Jeanne Laughlin joined in her place. Dr. Dillon officially retired in 1984 and was replaced by Dr. Arden Jones, who retired in 2012. Dr. Helen Walt joined as a part-time partner from 1985-1988.
In 1986 the practice moved to the newly built Family Medical Centre at 171 Carton Road and was joined by Dr. Jane Dexter and Dr. Ken Brown in 1988 and 1990 respectively.
Between November 1991 – June 1992 the Family Medical Centre was extended and altered to provide more working space and better facilities for patients.
Since then, the practice has seen many partners come and go, including Dr. Dilakshini Sathananthan (Dili Satha), Dr. Sadaf Bashir, Dr. Anthony Crofts-Barnes, Dr. Edward Fairhurst and Dr. Rachael Ridley and Dr Julie Day.
The practice was extended again in 2010 and 2017 and during the COVID-19 pandemic 2020-2021 we helped distribute vaccinations and helped the local area during this time.
We currently serve over 12,000 patients across Nottingham city, based in Sneinton and St. Anns. We are proud to serve such a diverse population both ethnically and socio-economically.
